A Life Without Water? Not a Chance!

I came across this article the other day and couldn’t believe what I was reading. In a nutshell, the report describes the danger of dehydration as a “myth” and says there is no evidence behind claims that water prevents multiple health problems. This is truly one of the most ridiculous comments from supposed “experts” that I have seen on this subject. It is obvious that these medical professionals ignore crucial requirements of the human body such as body composition, enzyme function, and natural detoxification.

Body & Organ Composition

  • Water makes up 3/4 of our body
  • Our brain is composed of 75% water
  • Our blood (especially plasma) is 82% water
  • Our lungs are 90% water

Enzyme Function
Enzymes work as catalysts in the body to make many things happen, including digestion. All enzymes within the human body, both metabolic (the enzymes our body makes) and supplemental (enzymes taken by mouth), require water to work properly. Additionally, enzymes can only work within the proper pH of an organ, which can only be achieved when the right amount of water is present.

Weight Management
The more hydrated you are, the quicker your metabolism works. But what happens when you're dehydrated? Not having enough water affects your liver. And since the liver has to help the kidneys function, the result is you can’t metabolize fat as quickly. That means your metabolism slows down, causing unwanted fat to remain.

Medication
Most medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter, suggest drinking ample water (usually at least eight ounces) with each dose. The first reason for this is to begin the process of absorption. Taking enough water can also possibly help balance any side effects.

Dehydration
This is a big threat for lots of people, especially during these summer months and with our lifestyles being so on-the-go. Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. We lose water on a daily basis when we breathe, perspire, and eliminate waste. Replacing these lost fluids is essential.

Detoxify
Water helps your body naturally detoxify throughout the day. Getting enough water assists the detoxifying organs in filtering out waste and supports regular bowel movements. Without sufficient water, these organs can become fatigued, which means toxic waste inside the body does not get disposed of properly.

So Drink Up!
The bottom line is that your body needs water, and it’s your job to give your body what it needs to stay healthy and balanced. The standard recommended water intake for adults is eight glasses of water a day, ten ounces of water in each glass.

If you want to be exact, divide your weight in half and drink the amount of ounces. For example, if a person weighs 100 lbs., he or she would need to drink 50 ounces a day, or five ten-ounce glasses of water a day. This is a baseline and would increase depending on how much you perspire, your overall health, and the weather conditions.

Also, remember that staying hydrated is not restricted to drinking water! Milk, juice, and other liquids – even some fruits and vegetables – can all be sources of water. However, you should avoid caffeinated beverages (coffee, soda, and energy drinks) because they can actually cause you to lose fluids and become dehydrated. And be sure your water source offers clean, purified water.
